A practical music production guide from Godlike Sounds.

Your 808 sounds huge on its own. Then the drums and melody come in, and the impact disappears. Turning it up makes the master louder, but the beat still does not knock.

Make your next beat

Get the tools. Find your sound.

To make 808s hit harder, start with a sound that fits the beat, tune it, control its length and give it room beside the kick. Add harmonics when it needs definition on small speakers. Add low-end weight only when the source actually needs it.

Open your beat in FL Studio and follow along with Fruity Parametric EQ 2, Fruity Blood Overdrive and Fruity Limiter. Start with your own 808 sample or GODLIKE 808. Along the way, we will show where HEAT and INSTANT SUB can offer another way to shape the sound.

01 / SOUND SELECTION

The best 808 sample is the one that fits your beat.

A long, distorted 808 can carry a sparse rage beat. The same sound may swallow a busy drill pattern. Before reaching for an enhancer, audition a few sounds with your drums and melody playing, not only in solo.

Listen for three things: an attack that works with the kick, a tail that fits the rhythm, and a tone that remains readable at the notes you are using. If every preset needs extreme EQ to work, change the source or try the phrase in another octave.

Start in the preset browser. Compare sounds against the same MIDI phrase and at similar volume.

GODLIKE 808 V2 includes 94 sounds across six banks and supports WAV import. That gives you two starting points: pick a built-in sound or bring in an 808 you already like. Neither replaces checking the sound in your own arrangement.

02 / PITCH & ENVELOPE

Set up your 808 in FL Studio.

Check the stable tail of the 808 with a tuner; a pitch-swept attack can give a misleading reading. Confirm that the played note matches the intended bass note, then check the whole phrase against the melody. Being in the right key is not enough if the bass fights the chord underneath it.

Next, shorten the notes or release where one hit is spilling into the next. Long tails can create continuous low-end energy instead of distinct impacts. Leave deliberate overlap for slides, but remove accidental overlap.

Before adding effects

  1. Put the kick and 808 on separate Mixer inserts. Select each channel and use its target Mixer track selector to assign it.
  2. Open the 808 Piano roll and loop four bars with the melody. Check the sustained pitch, then correct the sample root note if the keys do not trigger the expected notes.
  3. For a native Sampler channel, enable the volume envelope so MIDI note length controls the tail. Shorten REL, then shorten notes that run into the next hit. Add a little release back if the ending clicks.
  4. For GODLIKE 808, use its own ADSR controls. Keep note overlap only where the transition is intentional.

Use the amplitude envelope to shape the ending, and adjust attack only if the front of the sound is too soft or clicks. In GODLIKE 808, the MONO control concerns monophonic note behaviour; it is not a stereo-width or mono-summing switch.

03 / FRUITY LIMITER

Duck the 808 when the kick hits.

First try a shorter kick or a tighter bass tail. If both still compete, let the kick briefly turn the 808 down. Insert Fruity Limiter on the 808 Mixer track.

Fruity Limiter COMP interface: A threshold, B ratio, C release and D sidechain selectorABCD
Fruity Limiter in COMP mode. A: THRES. B: RATIO. C: REL. D: SIDECHAIN. GUI: Image-Line.

Set up the sidechain

  1. Select the kick Mixer insert. Right-click the routing arrow beneath the 808 insert and choose Sidechain to this track. Keep the kick routed to the Master.
  2. Open the 808’s Fruity Limiter and click COMP. Right-click SIDECHAIN (D) and select the kick.
  3. Start with RATIO (B) at 4:1. Lower THRES (A) until the kick causes a small dip in bass level.
  4. Try a fast compressor attack and REL (C) around 100 ms. Adjust until the bass returns naturally before the next important hit.

Aim for subtle separation first. If the bass audibly disappears after every kick, reduce the ducking or shorten recovery. If it crackles, lengthen the timing. The suggested settings are a starting point for your loop.

For compressor-only work, set the LIMIT tab’s CEIL to maximum and its ATT to zero. Then return to COMP for the ducking controls.

04 / FRUITY BLOOD OVERDRIVE

Make the bass line easier to hear.

If the 808 has plenty of sub but disappears on a phone, try a little distortion. Insert Fruity Blood Overdrive on the 808, before the sidechain compressor, so the final ducking controls the processed sound.

Fruity Blood Overdrive: A pre amp, B post filter, C post gainABC
Fruity Blood Overdrive. A: PRE AMP adds drive. B: POST FILTER shapes the top end. C: POST GAIN balances the level. GUI: Image-Line.

Three controls to work with

  1. PRE AMP (A): start low and raise it slowly while the beat plays. Leave x100 off. Stop when the notes gain enough edge to follow.
  2. POST FILTER (B): adjust while listening to the buzz. Use it to soften an overly bright result without burying the new definition.
  3. POST GAIN (C): reduce the output to compensate for the drive. Toggle the Mixer slot’s enable light to compare processed and bypassed sound at similar loudness.

For this first pass, leave PRE BAND and COLOR alone. If the beat gets louder but the bass loses its front edge, back off PRE AMP. You want useful definition, not maximum distortion.

Another option: GODLIKE HEAT

Optional effect · Definition & attack

GODLIKE HEAT

An effect for an existing 808, not an instrument. It combines saturation, transient shaping, body, soft clipping and a dry/wet blend.

CHECK GODLIKE HEAT →

Start in WARM mode with modest HEAT. Increase it until the phrase becomes easier to follow, then back off if the buzz takes over. Add PUNCH only if the attack needs help. Use MIX to blend the effect and OUTPUT to compare at similar loudness. Keep BODY and CLIP conservative while you judge the saturation.

If you already added drive inside the instrument, listen before adding another saturation stage. More processors can flatten the attack or create harshness instead of making the bass feel bigger.

HEAT 3.0 is a free Windows x64 VST3 and macOS Universal VST3/AU effect. It includes four saturation characters, ten presets, A/B and level matching. Free checkout requires contact details and mailing-list opt-in; check the product page before downloading.

05 / FRUITY PARAMETRIC EQ 2

Shape the lows without swallowing the kick.

Insert Parametric EQ 2 before the drive stage for corrective EQ. Begin with a flat response. The controls below let you target the part of your own sample that needs attention.

Make one small correction

  1. Find the problem: play the bass with the kick. Is it boomy, boxy or genuinely thin?
  2. For a boxy sound: use a peaking band. Try a broad, shallow cut around 200 to 400 Hz, then move it until the unwanted thickness clears. Skip the cut if it removes useful body.
  3. For missing weight: right-click Band 1 and select Type > Low shelf. Try a small lift around 60 to 80 Hz. Check every bass note and the kick before keeping it.
  4. Adjust width: hover over a band and scroll. Keep the correction broad and gentle to start.

Do not copy the displayed EQ curve. Start flat and make the small move your sound needs. Avoid automatically high-passing the 808: a low cut can remove the foundation you are trying to strengthen.

A faster low-end option: INSTANT SUB

Official GODLIKE INSTANT SUB one-knob plugin product image
Optional effect · Clean weight

GODLIKE INSTANT SUB

Reinforces low-frequency content already in the signal. It does not generate a new sub layer or add saturation, clipping or harmonics.

CHECK GODLIKE INSTANT SUB →

Start with SUB at zero and raise it gradually while the full beat plays. Reduce the channel level if necessary to preserve headroom. Stop when the bass gains useful weight; back off if the kick loses definition or the limiter starts working harder.

If the source has no useful low-frequency content, choose another sound or deliberately create a tuned bass layer. An enhancer cannot recover a fundamental that is not there.

INSTANT SUB is currently available free for Windows x64 VST3; macOS is not supported. GODLIKE 808 itself has Windows and Mac versions, check the product page for supported formats.

  1. Loop a short section of your beat. Keep the kick, melody and main drums active. Choose a preset that works before heavy processing.
  2. Check the pitch and rhythm. Verify the bass notes, shorten unnecessary tails and keep slides intentional.
  3. Shape one dimension at a time. Adjust PUNCH for the front edge, DRIVE for character and TONE for upper-spectrum balance. Use SUB cautiously if the fundamental needs support.
  4. Compensate with OUTPUT. Switch between the original and shaped sound at similar loudness. Listen for clearer impact, not just a bigger meter reading.
  5. Add an external effect only for a remaining problem. HEAT can help with definition; INSTANT SUB can reinforce existing lows. Skip either if the instrument already sounds right.
  6. Save your starting point. Save the preset, then recheck it when the arrangement changes. A good setting in one beat is not a universal mix preset.

Before you export

  • Listen to the full beat quietly. Can you still follow the bass rhythm?
  • Check headphones, available speakers and a small playback device.
  • Check the mix summed to mono; listen for unexpected low-end loss.
  • Compare at similar loudness with a reference in the same style.
  • Check that added bass is not causing unwanted master limiting.
08 / FAQ

808 questions, answered.

How do I make 808s hit harder in FL Studio?

Choose a suitable source, verify its root note, control the note lengths and release, then listen with the kick. Add saturation or clipping only when needed and compensate the output level. If using a VST instrument, check its MIDI behaviour instead of assuming FL Studio’s native slide notes work identically in every plugin.

What are the best 808 samples?

The best choice depends on the arrangement. Shorter, controlled tails often suit busy bass patterns; sustained, harmonically rich sounds can suit sparse beats. Audition at the actual pitches and tempo of your song, at comparable volume.

Should the kick or 808 be louder?

There is no fixed balance. Decide which sound owns the transient and which carries the sustained low end, then set their levels in the full arrangement. Peak-meter readings alone do not tell you which one feels dominant.

Do I need a soft clipper on every 808?

No. A clipper can control peaks and change character, but it can also reduce the transient contrast you wanted. Keep it only if a level-matched comparison improves the beat.

Does INSTANT SUB create sub bass from nothing?

No. It reinforces low-frequency content already present. It is not a subharmonic generator and does not add harmonics for small-speaker translation.
